Zelensky Hopes Democratic Gains in US Midterm Elections Will Bring More Support for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed hope that the Democrats’ gains in the US midterm elections will translate into increased military and financial assistance for Kyiv as it continues its war against Russia.

In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF on Wednesday, Zelensky said potential changes in Congress, with Democrats expected to take control of both chambers next year, could benefit Ukraine. He acknowledged support from Republicans but noted that Democrats had been particularly clear in their commitment to helping Kyiv.

“I am also grateful to the Republicans, but the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing assistance to Ukraine,” Zelensky said, according to comments released by ZDF ahead of the broadcast.

He also pointed to the possibility of stronger ties between Washington and European capitals, expressing hope that a new balance of political power would lead to greater assistance for Ukraine.

Zelensky said stronger US financial and military backing could also influence Russian President Vladimir Putin. He argued that a clear commitment from Congress, alongside Europe’s support, would send a significant message to Moscow.

The Ukrainian leader has sought to improve his often difficult relationship with US President Donald Trump, particularly following their contentious Oval Office meeting in February 2025, when Trump accused him of being ungrateful for American assistance.

More recently, Trump has taken several steps viewed as favourable to Russia, including moves involving Russian diesel imports and sanctions relief.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict are expected to resume next week. US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff said Washington would host delegations from Ukraine and Russia in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11. Discussions are expected to focus on ending the war, post-war security arrangements and measures to reduce tensions. The trilateral talks had been on hold for several months.

During the ZDF interview, Zelensky also addressed Ukraine’s dependence on Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has played an important role in maintaining communications during the war.

He thanked SpaceX for providing connectivity, particularly during the early stages of the conflict, but criticised Musk’s position on the war.

Zelensky said last week that Starlink and its military-focused Starshield network, used in Ukrainian attack and air-defence drone operations, had returned to operating levels seen before restrictions were introduced. Trump has denied involvement in the decision related to the service slowdown.
