5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes China’s Xinjiang Near Ladakh, Tremors Reported In J&K

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck China’s Xinjiang region near the Ladakh border late Thursday night, with seismic activity reportedly felt in parts of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the earthquake, which occurred at a considerable depth beneath the earth’s surface.

According to the NCS, the earthquake took place at 10:26 pm IST on November 5, 2026. Its depth was recorded at 164 kilometres, with the epicentre located at latitude 35.587° North and longitude 78.130° East in China’s Xinjiang region.

China Witnessed A Deadly Earthquake In Recent Months

The latest seismic activity comes after a devastating earthquake struck China’s Tibet region, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread damage.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, the 7.0-magnitude earthquake killed at least 16 people and injured 32 others. The powerful tremor also caused more than 300 houses to collapse and disrupted electricity and telecommunications services in the affected areas.

Rescue teams were deployed to carry out relief operations and search for survivors as authorities assessed the destruction.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located in Maru township in Baqen county.

Tibet Among China’s Earthquake-Prone Regions

China frequently experiences seismic activity, particularly in its western and southwestern regions. Tibet has witnessed several destructive earthquakes, causing casualties and extensive infrastructure damage.

In January 2025, another major earthquake struck Tingri county in Tibet, killing at least 126 people and damaging numerous buildings.

The latest tremor near the Ladakh border once again highlights the seismic activity affecting parts of the Himalayan region and neighbouring areas of China.
