India-Born Nithya Raman Wins Los Angeles Mayoral Election, Makes History As Democratic Socialist Leader
India-Born Nithya Raman Defeats Karen Bass To Become Los Angeles Mayor, Signals Political Shift
Nithya Raman, an India-born politician and member of the Los Angeles City Council, has defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a major upset, marking a significant political shift in America’s second-largest city. Raman, who received backing from the Democratic Socialists of America, emerged as the winner despite facing a candidate with considerably stronger political connections and establishment support.
At 45, Raman’s victory represents a generational change in Los Angeles politics. Her rise also reflects the growing influence of progressive and democratic socialist candidates across the United States, following Zohran Mamdani’s election in New York the previous year.
Raman’s decision to challenge Bass came as a surprise because she had initially supported the incumbent. However, she later argued that Los Angeles had reached a breaking point and launched her mayoral campaign shortly before the nomination deadline.
The defeat makes Bass the first Los Angeles mayor in 20 years to lose a re-election bid. Her administration faced mounting criticism following the devastating Palisades Fire, which broke out while she was travelling overseas. The disaster raised questions about the city’s emergency preparedness and became a major issue during the election campaign.
Homelessness, Public Safety And City Services At The Centre Of Raman’s Campaign
Raman’s campaign focused heavily on homelessness, public safety and deteriorating civic infrastructure. She criticised the previous administration’s response to homelessness, arguing that existing measures had failed to address the crisis effectively.
Her proposed strategy includes expanding medical outreach teams to engage with people living on streets and in homeless encampments. The aim is to establish trust, provide medical assistance and eventually help individuals move into permanent accommodation.
She has also proposed increasing housing availability to reduce dependence on hotels being rented by the city to accommodate homeless residents.
Raman has set an ambitious target of reducing the number of people living in tents and encampments by at least 50% by 2028, when Los Angeles is scheduled to host the Olympic Games.
On policing, she has indicated plans to replace the police chief, expressing concerns over what she considers excessive cooperation with federal immigration authorities. She has also promised improvements to neighbourhood services, including cleaner streets, repaired sidewalks, better roads and functioning streetlights.
How Raman Overcame Bass’s Political Advantage
Raman’s victory came despite Bass receiving support from several influential Democratic leaders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Bass also enjoyed backing from nearly every member of the Los Angeles City Council. Before becoming mayor in 2022, she had served in the California Legislature and the US Congress and was reportedly considered as a potential running mate for former President Joe Biden in 2020.
Billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso, who lost to Bass in the 2022 mayoral election, also indicated that he was voting for the incumbent, although he did not formally endorse her.
Raman, meanwhile, built support among progressive organisations and advocacy groups. Her backers included Our Revolution, founded by Senator Bernie Sanders, and the Sierra Club.
She also faced criticism from Bass, who questioned her experience and described her positions on homelessness and policing as extreme. Raman countered those attacks by highlighting the city’s continuing problems and presenting herself as a candidate for change.
A New Political Challenge For Los Angeles
An urban planner by profession, Raman will take charge of a city facing several interconnected challenges, including homelessness, public safety concerns, infrastructure problems and economic uncertainty.
Los Angeles is also home to a major entertainment industry, an international port, leading universities and research institutions, making the city’s economic and administrative priorities particularly significant.
During the campaign, Raman sought to broaden her political network, including through a widely publicised private meeting with former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Her ability to build relationships across political and business circles could prove important as she prepares to govern a city of approximately 3.8 million people.
With the 2028 Olympic Games approaching, Raman will face pressure to translate her campaign promises into measurable improvements in housing, public services and urban infrastructure.
