Indian-Origin Harmeet Dhillon Steps Down From US Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division After Midterm Elections

Indian-origin lawyer Harmeet Kaur Dhillon has resigned as head of the US Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, becoming the first senior official in the Trump administration to leave office following the Republican Party’s major setback in the midterm elections.

US Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Dhillon’s departure on Thursday, acknowledging her contributions to the department. In a post on X, Blanche praised her work, saying she had defended the civil liberties of Americans and enforced the law without fear or favour.

However, Dhillon maintained that her resignation was voluntary. Speaking to Fox News, she said she had made the decision herself but postponed the announcement following a request from White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles until after Election Day.

Dhillon also took to social media to describe her tenure as the “honour of a lifetime” and expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for appointing her to the position.

Why Did Harmeet Dhillon Resign?

Dhillon did not disclose any specific reason behind her decision to leave the Justice Department. Instead, she highlighted the initiatives undertaken by the Civil Rights Division during her tenure.

In her farewell message on X, she claimed that her team had worked to dismantle what she described as unlawful diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes. She also pointed to efforts aimed at protecting women’s and girls’ sports.

“Serving my country as AAG for Civil Rights has been the honour of a lifetime,” Dhillon wrote, while thanking Trump for the opportunity to serve his administration.

Her departure comes amid a significant political setback for Republicans in the midterm elections, although she has denied that the election outcome prompted her resignation.

Who Is Harmeet Kaur Dhillon?

Born in Chandigarh, Punjab, into a Punjabi Sikh family, Harmeet Kaur Dhillon moved to the United States with her parents after the family had initially spent time in London.

She became a naturalised American citizen at the age of 10 and subsequently built a career in law and Republican politics.

A practising lawyer, Dhillon established a law firm in San Francisco and became associated with Donald Trump well before joining his administration. Her legal firm was also involved in Trump’s legal efforts following the 2020 presidential election.

Over the years, she emerged as a prominent Trump supporter, frequently appearing on conservative podcasts and using social media to express her political views.

At an event in New York in May, Dhillon described her parents’ decision to move to the United States as the “greatest gift” they had given her.

Her resignation marks the end of her tenure as one of the senior Indian-origin figures in the Trump administration, while her next professional move remains unclear.
