Devon Conway Ruled Out of India ODI Series as New Zealand’s Injury Concerns Mount

New Zealand have been dealt another blow ahead of the remaining matches of their ODI series against India, with opener Devon Conway ruled out after suffering a concussion during a training session. The setback adds to the hosts’ injury concerns, with key players Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman already unavailable.

Conway sustained the injury after colliding with fast bowler Matt Henry while attempting to catch the same ball during a fielding practice session at Eden Park on Tuesday. The incident forced him to miss the opening ODI, in which Tim Seifert took his place as opener and scored 38 runs.

New Zealand struggled with the bat in the series opener, managing just 185 runs in 40.2 overs. Blair Tickner contributed 34 runs towards the end of the innings, while India’s Arshdeep Singh claimed four wickets and Gurnoor Brar picked up three.

India’s run chase was affected by rain, resulting in a revised target of 143 runs in 32 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. Despite Rohit Sharma departing without scoring, Virat Kohli led the chase with an unbeaten-looking innings of 74 off 51 balls, while captain Shubman Gill added 37. India reached the revised target at 143 for five in 22.4 overs, securing a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.

New Zealand Cricket announced on Friday that Conway would take no further part in the series. Nick Kelly, initially named in the squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs, has been drafted in as his replacement and will join the team in Wellington. Meanwhile, Auckland Aces batter Dale Phillips has been added to the New Zealand A squad for its final four-day fixture against India A.

How Did Devon Conway Sustain the Injury?

The injury occurred during Tuesday’s training session at Eden Park when Conway and Henry collided while attempting to complete a catch. Both cricketers received immediate medical attention and underwent head injury assessments.

Conway was subsequently taken to an Auckland medical facility for further examination, where doctors diagnosed a concussion. Henry, meanwhile, has been cleared of concussion and is available for selection in the second ODI.

New Zealand’s Injury Problems Continue

Conway’s absence compounds New Zealand’s selection challenges, with Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman also missing the series due to injuries. Ravindra is recovering from a shoulder problem, while Chapman is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Henry’s return to availability offers some relief to the hosts. The fast bowler had previously missed the final three T20Is against India after suffering a low-grade tear in his right quadriceps.

With several regular players unavailable, New Zealand will need to reconsider their batting combination and find ways to strengthen their lineup as they attempt to bounce back from the opening defeat.

The second ODI between India and New Zealand is scheduled to take place at Hagley Oval in Wellington on Saturday, November 7.
