Teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again underlined why he is regarded.
As one of Indian cricket’s brightest young prospects, smashing a breathtaking 94 off just 29 balls to power India A to victory over Sri Lanka A in the one-day tri-series final in Dambulla.
While the explosive knock grabbed headlines, it was Sooryavanshi’s post-match interaction that quickly went viral. Asked how he was adjusting to the demands of 50-over cricket after earning fame through T20 cricket and the IPL, the 15-year-old offered a confident response that caught fans’ attention.
The youngster reminded viewers that despite his growing reputation as a T20 specialist, much of his cricketing journey has actually been built in the one-day format.
His claim is backed by numbers. Although Sooryavanshi’s rise to prominence came through his aggressive displays in franchise cricket, he has already played extensively in youth and List A cricket. He is India’s highest run-scorer in Under-19 one-day internationals, amassing 1,412 runs and four centuries in 25 matches.
The final innings was particularly significant given that Sooryavanshi had endured a relatively quiet run earlier in the tournament. Questions had begun to emerge over his ability to adapt to challenging batting conditions, but the left-hander responded in emphatic fashion.
Speaking after the match, Sooryavanshi said he focused on executing his plans and making better use of the powerplay after discussions with the coaching staff. He added that adapting to different conditions was the key challenge and expressed satisfaction at overcoming it.
What followed was a stunning exhibition of power-hitting. Sooryavanshi raced to a half-century in just 11 deliveries, setting a new List A record for the fastest fifty, before finishing on 94 at a strike rate exceeding 324.
The innings added another chapter to his growing reputation as a big-match performer and strengthened calls for a future place in India’s senior white-ball setup. Having already earned recognition in the T20 format, Sooryavanshi’s latest masterclass served as a reminder that his ambitions — and abilities — extend well beyond the shortest version of the game.
