Ajit Doval Meets Myanmar President, Focus on Border Security and Strategic Cooperation

India and Myanmar on Sunday held high-level discussions on security and regional issues, with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval meeting Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi during the latter’s first official visit to India since assuming office.

The meeting took place shortly after Hlaing’s arrival in the national capital and ahead of his scheduled talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The visit is being viewed as an important step in strengthening bilateral engagement amid evolving security and geopolitical challenges in the region.

According to official sources, the discussions centred on border management, insurgency-related concerns, illegal immigration and cross-border trafficking along the India-Myanmar frontier. Both sides reviewed the existing security framework and explored ways to deepen cooperation in intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism operations and defence coordination.

The two leaders also discussed efforts to enhance connectivity between the neighbouring countries through key infrastructure projects. Progress on the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway featured prominently in the talks, given their significance to India’s Act East Policy and broader regional integration goals.

Sources indicated that the meeting also included an assessment of Myanmar’s internal security situation and wider strategic developments in the region. The growing influence of China in Myanmar and Southeast Asia was among the issues discussed, reflecting its implications for regional stability and India’s strategic interests.

Officials familiar with the discussions said both sides emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and stability along the shared border while expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Strengthening economic linkages, improving connectivity and enhancing security coordination were identified as key priorities.

The engagement underscores India’s continued focus on fostering stability in its neighbourhood through a combination of diplomatic outreach, security cooperation and development partnerships.

President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in India on Saturday for a five-day official visit. He began his trip with a visit to the Mahabodhi Temple in Gaya before travelling to New Delhi. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes ministers, senior government officials and business representatives.

The visit comes less than two months after Hlaing assumed office following Myanmar’s parliamentary elections and is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral ties between the two countries.
