Goodbye, Dada: Ajit Pawar’s Funeral Held Today in Baramati Amid Massive Supporter Turnout

The funeral of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president Ajit Pawar will be held today at 11 am in Baramati with full state honours, the General Administration Department (Protocol) announced.

Mortal remains and last rites

Pawar’s body was brought to the Vidya Pratishtan campus in Pune district on Wednesday evening, where thousands of party workers and local residents gathered to pay their last respects. As the flower-decked vehicle entered the premises, slogans of “Ajit dada amar rahe” and “Ajit dada parat ya” echoed through the town, highlighting the public’s grief.

Police officials stated the body will remain at the Katewadi residence until 9 am, after which it will be transported to the GD Madgulkar Auditorium. The final procession will then move to the Vidya Pratishtan ground, where the state-honoured cremation will take place.

Earlier, Pawar’s body was kept at a medical college in Baramati before being taken in procession to the family-run educational institute. People lined both sides of the roads, many breaking down as the cortege passed through his home turf.

Tragic death and political impact

Ajit Pawar (66) and four others died when their chartered aircraft crashed on Wednesday morning, barely 200 metres from the Baramati airport runway. His sudden death has created a vacuum in the BJP-led ruling coalition in Maharashtra and sparked questions about the future of the NCP.

Dignitaries and supporters

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several leaders from across parties are expected to attend the funeral. Thousands of NCP workers and residents from different parts of the state have also arrived in Baramati to pay tribute. Authorities have announced that a memorial will be constructed in his memory.

Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) regarding the aircraft crash, and further investigations are underway.
