Anna Hazare Urges PM Modi to Resolve Protests Through Dialogue, Voices Support for Wangchuk and NEET Protesters

Veteran social activist Anna Hazare has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with protesters through dialogue instead of confrontation, saying democratic disagreements should be resolved by listening to citizens rather than relying on force.

In a letter dated July 22, Hazare expressed concern over the police action during the ongoing protests in New Delhi led by environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk and students demanding accountability over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

‘Dialogue Is Better Than Confrontation’

Hazare said reports of violence and police action against protesters were disturbing and inconsistent with democratic values. While emphasising that protests should remain peaceful and public property must not be damaged, he urged the government to address the concerns of demonstrators through meaningful discussions.

According to Hazare, citizens raising their voices over public issues should not be viewed merely as a law-and-order challenge but as participants in a democratic process whose grievances deserve to be heard.

Raises Concern Over NEET Controversy

Referring to the NEET examination controversy, Hazare said the alleged paper leak and other irregularities had caused widespread anxiety among students and their families. He noted that nearly 22 lakh candidates appeared for the examination this year and said the controversy had deepened frustration among aspirants.

Hazare also pointed to repeated allegations of irregularities in recruitment and competitive examinations, saying such incidents have eroded public trust and raised serious questions about accountability within the system.

Calls for Greater Accountability

The social activist argued that responsibility for major lapses should not be limited to lower-level officials. He said those occupying senior positions in government should also be held accountable whenever significant administrative failures occur.

According to Hazare, fixing responsibility at the highest levels would send a strong message throughout the administration and help improve governance and public confidence.

Backs Dialogue With Sonam Wangchuk

Hazare also referred to Sonam Wangchuk’s protest, expressing disappointment that meaningful talks were not initiated before action was taken against the demonstrators.

He noted that despite the protest continuing for several days in Delhi, no senior government representative had engaged directly with the protesters to understand their concerns.

Appeal to the Prime Minister

Concluding his letter, Hazare urged Prime Minister Modi to treat protesters as citizens seeking answers rather than political adversaries. He said differences of opinion are natural in a democracy and should be addressed through dialogue, sensitivity and mutual respect.

Expressing hope for a peaceful resolution, Hazare called on the government to strengthen democratic values by opening channels of communication and resolving disputes through constructive engagement instead of confrontation.
