Asia Cup Selection Day: Big Calls, Bold Omissions Await.
The selection day is closing in, and so are the speculations. On Tuesday, August 19, the Indian selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will sit with captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir in Mumbai to pick the squad for the Asia Cup T20, starting September 9 in the UAE.
This eight-team event comes after a brief lull in Indian cricket, but all eyes will be on the squad announcement—it will offer the first real glimpse into India’s roadmap for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
SURYA CLEARED TO LEAD
First up, a boost for India: Suryakumar Yadav has cleared his fitness test after undergoing sports hernia surgery post-IPL 2025. The Mumbai Indians star will lead India in a major tournament for the first time.
OPENING LOGJAM: GILL OR NO GILL?
The hottest debate is around Shubman Gill. Fresh off a record-breaking Test series in England, Gill is being projected as India’s next all-format superstar. But does his T20 approach fit India’s new high-tempo template?
Gill scored 650 runs at 155 SR in IPL 2025, but his T20I strike rate lags at 139.
In his absence, Abhishek Sharma (535 runs, 193 SR) and Sanju Samson (487 runs, 171 SR) have excelled as openers.
Tilak Varma (413 runs, 170 SR) has cemented No. 3.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (559 runs, 159 SR in IPL 2025) also deserves a place as backup opener.
If Gill is named vice-captain, as reports suggest, he could disrupt this settled order.
THE MIDDLE ORDER: IYER vs PARAG
Shreyas Iyer is pushing hard for a recall after a stellar IPL 2025 (604 runs, 175 SR). His experience and spin-game suit UAE conditions, but his return could push Riyan Parag out despite his utility as an all-rounder.
WICKETKEEPER PUZZLE
Sanju Samson is the first-choice keeper.
The backup race is between Jitesh Sharma (RCB finisher, IPL 2025 SR 170) and Dhruv Jurel.
With Pant and Kishan still injured, Jitesh’s finishing power makes him the frontrunner.
RINKU & DUBE SLIPPING AWAY
Rinku Singh: 190 runs in 18 T20Is since WC 2024; underwhelming IPL 2025 (206 runs). Could miss out.
Shivam Dube: Crucial in WC 2024 win, but poor recent form and dip in strike rate may cost him a place.
ALL-ROUND OPTIONS
Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are locks. Washington Sundar is in contention for his versatility. Nitish Kumar Reddy is out injured, while Dube looks vulnerable.
BUMRAH QUESTION
Jasprit Bumrah has made himself available, but selectors may rest him considering UAE’s conditions and a heavy home Test season ahead.
Arshdeep Singh leads the pace attack.
Harshit Rana has impressed.
Prasidh Krishna (Purple Cap, IPL 2025) could return as the X-factor.
SPIN UNIT
Varun Chakravarthy is a certain pick.
One of Kuldeep Yadav or Ravi Bishnoi will partner him, though Washington Sundar could edge them both for batting depth.
PROBABLE SQUAD (16–17)
XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh.
Bench: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jitesh Sharma, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana.
Likely to miss out: Shubman Gill, Riyan Parag, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Siraj, Nitish Reddy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
