Sri Lanka controlled the contest for 20 overs. England dominated the next 16.

In their Super 8 clash at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, Sri Lanka produced a disciplined bowling performance to hold England to 146 for 7. On a surface assisting spin, that total appeared chaseable. What followed, however, was a dramatic collapse that turned a position of strength into a crushing 51-run defeat.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 95 in 16.4 overs, handing England captain Harry Brook a perfect birthday present — two valuable Super 8 points.

England Outspin Sri Lanka

The Pallekele pitch offered grip and turn, and Sri Lanka leaned heavily on their slow bowlers, sending down 12 overs of spin to claim five wickets for 85 runs. It was a solid effort.

But England were even better.

Part-time off-spinner Will Jacks delivered the decisive blows, bowling his full quota and claiming three crucial wickets. England’s spinners combined for seven dismissals, transforming what looked a below-par total into a match-winning one.

The victory also extended England’s dominance over Sri Lanka in men’s T20Is — their 12th consecutive win in the format against the Islanders, a streak stretching back to 2014.

With sterner Super 8 challenges against New Zealand and Pakistan looming in Group 2, England will take confidence from defending a modest total on spin-friendly conditions.

A Chase Derailed Early

Chasing 147 demanded composure, especially with in-form opener Pathum Nissanka at the top. Fresh off a century at the same venue against Australia, expectations were high. But after two early boundaries, Nissanka fell for nine, and the innings quickly unravelled.

The slide began with Jofra Archer striking in the third over. From 15 without loss, Sri Lanka collapsed to 34 for 5 inside the powerplay. Jacks removed Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake in the same over, while Archer accounted for Kamil Mishara.

Dunith Wellalage briefly counterpunched with a pair of boundaries but soon departed for 10, giving Jacks his third wicket and tightening England’s grip.

No Way Back

Captain Dasun Shanaka attempted resistance with a fighting 30, but wickets continued to tumble. Liam Dawson dismissed Kamindu Mendis with a return catch, and Dushan Hemantha endured an unfortunate dismissal after dislodging his own stumps while evading a sharp bouncer from Jamie Overton.

Once Shanaka fell in the 15th over — snapped up by Adil Rashid — the result was beyond doubt. No partnership crossed 20 runs, underlining the scale of Sri Lanka’s batting failure.

Head coach Sanath Jayasuriya and his players were left stunned. After matching England blow for blow with the ball, Sri Lanka’s inability to handle scoreboard pressure derailed their Super 8 campaign.

It was a night that began with promise and ended in regret — a reminder that in T20 cricket, dominance must last all 40 overs.
