Chennai Open: Vaishnavi Adkar Scripts Career-First WTA Win, Maaya Rajeshwaran Stuns Eighth Seed

Indian tennis witnessed a memorable outing at the Chennai Open as young talents Vaishnavi Adkar and Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi delivered impressive performances to advance to the second round of the WTA 250 tournament.

While 21-year-old Adkar registered her maiden WTA Tour-level victory after staging a remarkable comeback against Britain’s Jodie Burrage, 17-year-old Maaya produced a stunning upset by defeating eighth seed and World No.115 Katarzyna Kawa of Poland.

Adkar prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 after recovering from a 3-5 deficit in the deciding set. Maaya, meanwhile, held her nerve in a thrilling encounter to secure a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5) victory.

Both Indian players entered the main draw as wild cards and made the most of their opportunities at the SDAT Tennis Stadium, giving the home crowd plenty to celebrate.

Adkar Overcomes Tough Challenge to Claim Maiden WTA Victory

Vaishnavi Adkar produced an impressive display of determination and fighting spirit to overcome experienced British player Jodie Burrage in a contest lasting more than two hours.

The Pune-based youngster struggled initially as Burrage broke her serve twice to take the opening set 6-3. The Briton, who has previously featured in Grand Slam main draws and reached the world’s top 100, appeared to have the upper hand.

However, Adkar responded strongly in the second set, improving her returns and displaying greater consistency from the baseline. She secured two breaks to win the set 6-3 and force a decider.

One of the crucial moments came during the third game of the second set, when Adkar saved four break points and negotiated six deuces to hold her serve.

The deciding set brought another test of character. Adkar initially gained an advantage, but Burrage fought back to move ahead 5-3, putting the Indian on the verge of defeat.

Refusing to give up, Adkar broke back to reduce the deficit before putting Burrage under renewed pressure in the 11th game. A well-judged drop shot, followed by a forehand winner, helped her create a break opportunity. Burrage subsequently sent a forehand long, allowing Adkar to take the lead.

The Indian then delivered a confident service game, winning it without dropping a point to complete a memorable 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

Former Indian doubles star Rohan Bopanna, who coaches at the academy where Adkar trains, was present in her corner throughout the match and encouraged her to maintain the pressure.

Adkar will now face seventh seed Anastasia Zakharova of Russia in the second round. Zakharova booked her place with a 7-6(3), 6-1 win over Polina Iatcenko.

17-Year-Old Maaya Rajeshwaran Produces Major Upset

Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi delivered one of the standout performances of the tournament by defeating Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa in a closely contested three-set encounter.

Ranked 669th in the world, the 17-year-old faced a formidable challenge against Kawa, who entered the tournament as the eighth seed and World No.115.

Despite the significant difference in rankings, Maaya displayed confidence and composure from the beginning. She claimed the opening set 6-4 after putting the Polish player’s serve under pressure and converting two break opportunities.

Kawa responded strongly in the second set, using her experience to dominate proceedings and win it 6-2, taking the match into a deciding set.

The final set turned into an intense contest, with neither player managing to establish a commanding advantage. Maaya maintained her concentration during the crucial moments and produced a composed performance in the tie-break to win it 7-5.

The victory gave the teenager a memorable breakthrough against a seeded opponent and secured her place in the last 16.

Maaya will next meet Poland’s Weronika Falkowska, who defeated Czech player Linda Fruhvirtova 7-6(3), 6-4 in her opening-round match.

The victories of Adkar and Maaya provided a significant boost to India’s campaign at the Chennai Open.
