Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have been increased by ₹2 per kg by state-run distributor Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), taking the new retail price to ₹86 per kg across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and adjoining areas.
This marks the second hike in recent weeks, after MGL last revised CNG prices upward by ₹2 per kg on May 14. The company supplies CNG across multiple locations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and select districts such as Latur and Dharashiv (Osmanabad).
The latest revision is expected to raise operating costs for private vehicle owners, taxi operators, and public transport fleets that rely on CNG. Even after the increase, CNG continues to remain a more cost-efficient fuel option compared to petrol and diesel on a per-kilometre basis.
In parallel, petrol and diesel prices were also increased, with petrol rising by ₹2.61 per litre to ₹111.21 and diesel by ₹2.71 per litre to ₹97.83 in Mumbai. This marks the fourth fuel price increase in under two weeks, reflecting the delayed pass-through of higher global crude oil prices amid geopolitical tensions.
Officials and reports link the recent volatility in global energy markets to disruptions in shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, which handles a significant share of global oil and LNG trade.
Amid rising fuel costs, the government has urged conservation measures such as reduced non-essential travel, promotion of remote work, and efficient fuel usage to help manage import bills and pressure on the current account deficit.
