A day after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation was formally accepted.

The state is set for a leadership change with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar likely to be sworn in as the next chief minister on June 3.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is scheduled to meet on Saturday to formally elect its new leader, a step that is expected to pave the way for Shivakumar’s elevation to the top post.

Siddaramaiah had submitted his resignation to the Governor’s office on Thursday, stating that he was acting in line with the party leadership’s decision. His resignation was subsequently accepted, ending months of speculation over a possible leadership change in Karnataka.

Shivakumar, a senior Congress leader credited with strengthening the party’s organisational base in the state, is widely expected to be unanimously chosen as the CLP leader.

Following his resignation, Siddaramaiah met senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi to discuss the transition process and the future leadership structure in Karnataka.

According to party sources, Siddaramaiah expressed gratitude to Rahul Gandhi for his tenure as chief minister and informed him about his resignation as directed by the party leadership. Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala described the meeting as cordial, stating that leaders “discussed multiple issues” and that there was no obstacle to a smooth transition of power in the state.
