Cristiano Ronaldo’s heartfelt gesture has brought a ray of hope to a young Venezuelan boy who survived last month’s devastating earthquake but lost his family and one of his legs in the tragedy.

The Portugal captain sent a personal video message to Andres Mieles, inviting him to watch one of his matches and meet him once he recovers.

The emotional gesture came shortly after Ronaldo inspired Portugal to a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Croatia, helping his side secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

In a video message recorded for Andres, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner offered words of encouragement and a promise to meet the young fan.

“Hello Andres, how are you? I’m making this video to send you a hug,” Ronaldo said.

“I know you’re a superfan. When you get well, I want to invite you to watch one of my matches and enjoy it, okay? I would love to meet you. A hug, my friend.”

According to reports, Ronaldo is also sending Andres a signed Portugal national team jersey after learning about the youngster’s ordeal.

Andres’ inspiring story

Andres was rescued from beneath the rubble after the powerful June 2026 earthquake struck Venezuela. Although he survived, the disaster claimed the lives of his family members, and doctors had to amputate one of his legs due to the severity of his injuries.

While recovering in hospital, Andres shared that his biggest wish was to own Cristiano Ronaldo’s Panini FIFA World Cup sticker, having lost his cherished sticker album in the earthquake. His story quickly gained traction on social media, with thousands of fans tagging Ronaldo in the hope that the football icon would see it.

Their efforts paid off as Ronaldo responded with a deeply personal message that has touched football fans around the world.

Portugal books Round of 16 spot

Ronaldo’s compassionate gesture followed another memorable performance on the field. The 41-year-old scored his first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout-stage goal as Portugal came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto.

After Ivan Perisic opened the scoring for Croatia, Ronaldo calmly converted a penalty to level the match before substitute Goncalo Ramos headed home a dramatic stoppage-time winner, sealing Portugal’s place in the Round of 16 under Roberto Martinez.

Portugal will now take on Spain in one of the marquee clashes of the knockout stage, with Ronaldo aiming to continue his quest for World Cup glory.
