CSK Restructure Coaching Staff as Mohit Sharma Becomes Bowling Coach, Albie Morkel Named Zaheer Khan’s Deputy

Chennai Super Kings have continued their coaching overhaul ahead of IPL 2027, appointing former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma as bowling coach and bringing back ex-CSK all-rounder Albie Morkel as deputy to head coach Zaheer Khan.

Zaheer confirmed Mohit’s appointment during his recent visit to Chennai, while the franchise officially announced Morkel’s return to the coaching set-up shortly afterwards. The appointments form part of CSK’s efforts to rebuild their support staff following three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance.

Zaheer, who replaced long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming, has been given the responsibility of shaping the franchise’s new coaching team. CSK have also appointed former England off-spinner Gareth Batty as an assistant coach as preparations gather pace ahead of the November 15 player retention deadline.

Mohit Sharma Returns to CSK in Coaching Role
Mohit’s appointment brings him back to a franchise where he enjoyed some of the early success of his IPL career. The 38-year-old represented Chennai between 2013 and 2015 before returning for another stint in 2019.

He later made a significant impact with Gujarat Titans, particularly during their run to the IPL 2023 final. His most recent IPL stint was with Delhi Capitals, and he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2025.

Mohit will succeed Eric Simons as CSK’s bowling coach. Having played 120 IPL matches and claimed 134 wickets, he brings considerable experience of the tournament and its demands. His understanding of Chennai’s environment could be an asset as the franchise looks to strengthen its bowling resources.

The announcement was highlighted in a promotional video featuring Zaheer interacting with the franchise’s mascot, Leo, during his visit to Chennai.

Albie Morkel Appointed Zaheer Khan’s Deputy
CSK have also reunited with one of their former all-rounders, appointing Albie Morkel as Zaheer’s deputy. The South African represented the franchise from 2008 to 2013 and was part of the team during a successful period in its history.

Morkel has continued to remain connected with the Super Kings franchise through its other teams. He recently took charge as head coach of Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 competition after Fleming stepped away from the position.

His experience as an international all-rounder, combined with his familiarity with the Super Kings’ cricketing culture, is expected to add continuity to Chennai’s revamped coaching structure.

Michael Hussey, Eric Simons Exit as CSK Reshape Backroom Team
The coaching changes have also resulted in the departure of several long-serving members of CSK’s support staff. Batting coach Michael Hussey has parted ways with the franchise after years of association as both a player and a coach. He took over the batting coach role in 2018.

Simons and fielding coach James Foster have also moved on, joining Fleming’s England Test coaching set-up.

Meanwhile, Batty’s appointment adds further experience to Zaheer’s team. The former England international recently stepped down as Surrey head coach to take up the IPL role with Chennai.

CSK Prepare for a Fresh Start Ahead of IPL 2027
The coaching overhaul comes at a crucial time for the five-time IPL champions, who are aiming to return to the playoffs after three successive disappointing campaigns.

With the November 15 retention deadline approaching, CSK must finalise their squad strategy before turning their attention to the auction. The combination of familiar franchise figures and fresh coaching ideas reflects the management’s attempt to build a stronger unit under Zaheer’s leadership.

The new appointments will be expected to help Chennai address their recent shortcomings and mount a serious challenge for a record-equalling sixth IPL title.
