Deadly Wildfires Ravage Italy, France and Spain, Forcing Thousands to Evacuate

Wildfires continued to rage across Italy, France and Spain on Wednesday, killing three firefighters, destroying vast stretches of land and forcing thousands of residents to flee as soaring temperatures, strong winds and prolonged dry conditions intensified the crisis across southern Europe.

The region is experiencing another severe heatwave, with temperatures climbing above 40°C in several areas. Scientists have repeatedly warned that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves and wildfires.

Sicily Battles Dozens of Blazes

In Italy’s Sicily, nearly 6,000 firefighters, forest rangers and civil protection personnel were deployed to tackle dozens of wildfires burning across the island.

Regional President Renato Schifani said around 50 fires remained active despite aerial firefighting operations. Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed that a firefighter died after falling ill while battling the flames.

Officials described the situation as critical, with scorching temperatures and extremely dry vegetation allowing fires to spread rapidly.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Calabria recorded more than 160 fires. Local authorities alleged that many of the blazes were deliberately started and launched investigations into suspected cases of arson.

France Mourns Firefighters, Thousands Evacuated

In France, two firefighters lost their lives while battling a wildfire near Bordeaux Airport, prompting tributes and renewed concerns over the pressures facing emergency services.

Massive fires in the country’s southwest forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and campers. One blaze scorched around 2,000 hectares in the scenic Arcachon Basin near Bordeaux, while another wildfire in the Var region consumed approximately 2,550 hectares after spreading rapidly through dry forestland.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters, supported by water-bombing aircraft, worked to contain the flames. Authorities evacuated around 700 residents from Le Porge, relocated more than 3,000 campers, and later expanded evacuation orders as the fires continued to spread.

Overall, about 12,000 people have been evacuated across southwest France, with officials warning that more evacuations may be necessary if weather conditions deteriorate.

Spain Battles Expanding Wildfires

In Spain, emergency authorities ordered evacuations around the historic city of Toledo, south of Madrid, after a fast-moving wildfire threatened nearby communities.

Residents received emergency alerts on their mobile phones, while several major roads were closed. Three villages were evacuated, and people in another were instructed to remain indoors with doors and windows shut until further notice.

The latest fire erupted as firefighters continued efforts to control another major blaze roughly 100 kilometres north of Madrid, which has already devastated around 32,000 hectares.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), Spain has already lost more than 393,000 hectares to wildfires in 2025, making it one of the country’s worst fire seasons in recent years.

Extreme Heat Fuelling the Crisis

Across southern Europe, prolonged drought, extreme heat and strong winds have created ideal conditions for wildfires to spread rapidly, stretching emergency services and prompting widespread evacuations.

Authorities across the affected countries have urged residents to follow evacuation orders, avoid fire-prone areas and remain alert as forecasts indicate that hot and dry weather is likely to persist in the coming days.
