Majority of Those Named in Mumbai Protest FIRs Are Under 25, One-Third Are Women: Report

More than half of the people named in Mumbai Police FIRs linked to protests supporting the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) agitation in Delhi are aged 25 years or younger, while nearly one in every three accused is a woman, according to a report by The Indian Express.

Citing police data, the report said that among the accused whose age details were available, the largest share belonged to the 18-25 age group, highlighting the strong participation of young people in the demonstrations.

Most Accused Are Young

According to the report, data from seven FIRs showed that age details were available for 261 of the 301 people named as accused.

Of these:

57 were aged 18-20 years
80 were between 21 and 25 years
53 belonged to the 26-30 years age group
40 were aged 31-40 years
31 were above 40 years

Age details for the remaining 40 accused were not recorded, though some were identified as students.

Women Account for Nearly One-Third of the Accused

The report further stated that 91 of the 301 accused are women, while 201 are men. The gender of nine individuals was not recorded, meaning women constitute roughly one-third of those named in the FIRs.

The data pertains to cases registered at Sion, Worli, Dadar, Wadala TT, Mahim, Kalachowkie and Bhoiwada police stations. Details of another FIR were reportedly unavailable.

The report also noted that the offences invoked in these cases are bailable and carry a maximum punishment of two years’ imprisonment.

Police Register 13 FIRs

Mumbai Police said 13 FIRs have been registered since July 18 in connection with protests held at various locations across the city. Around 400 people have been booked on charges including unlawful assembly, violation of prohibitory orders and wrongful restraint.

According to officials, demonstrations were held at Shivaji Park, Chaityabhoomi, Chembur and Shiv Sena Bhavan without prior permission. Protesters named in the FIRs were issued notices and later allowed to leave.

Police also initiated action over another demonstration at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar and said an additional FIR was being processed.

Protests Continue for Third Consecutive Day

Mumbai witnessed protests for the third straight day as students, activists and opposition leaders demonstrated over alleged examination irregularities and police action against protesters in Delhi.

The protesters demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and criticised the police crackdown on CJP supporters attempting to march towards Parliament.

According to officials, hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Garden in Chembur, where several protesters were detained before being released later.

Leaders including Aaditya Thackeray, Amit Thackeray and Fahad Ahmad visited the police station after the detentions. Aaditya Thackeray alleged that the protesters had assembled peacefully and claimed that attempts to suppress the movement would only strengthen it.
