Real Madrid edge Barcelona 2-1 in El Clasico to go five points clear at the top of LaLiga.

Real Madrid strengthened their hold on the LaLiga summit with a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the season’s first El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, October 26. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham sealed the win for Xabi Alonso’s side, who now sit five points clear of their arch-rivals.

Madrid, leading the table with 27 points from 10 matches, started aggressively as Vinícius Jr. won a penalty in the third minute, but a VAR review overturned the decision. Mbappé thought he had scored early, only for the flag to go up for offside. The French forward eventually broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, finishing coolly from a superb Bellingham through ball.

Barcelona hit back in the 38th minute through Fermín López, who converted a Marcus Rashford cutback to level the score. But Madrid restored their advantage just before halftime when Bellingham finished off a Vinícius Jr. cross in the 43rd minute.

The second half offered plenty of drama — Madrid missed a chance to extend their lead after Mbappé’s penalty was saved by Wojciech Szczęsny, while Lamine Yamal and Rashford came close for Barça. However, Pedri’s late red card left the visitors with 10 men, ending their comeback hopes.

Madrid held firm to secure the three points and tighten their grip on top spot. They next face Valencia, while Barcelona will look to bounce back against Elche.
