Fearless Sooryavanshi’s 97 Knocks Out SunRisers, Powers Rajasthan Closer to Final

There was only one moment on Wednesday night when Vaibhav Suryavanshi looked ordinary — and it came before the match had even begun.

During Rajasthan Royals’ pre-match football warm-up in Mullanpur, the 15-year-old struggled to keep possession, lost a couple of duels, and even failed in an attempted nutmeg against a teammate.

Once the IPL Eliminator started, though, nobody could lay a glove on him.

Suryavanshi produced one of the most explosive innings ever seen in an IPL knockout match, smashing a breathtaking 97 off just 29 balls to power Rajasthan Royals into Qualifier 2 with a commanding 47-run victory over SunRisers Hyderabad.

The teenage sensation hammered 12 sixes and five boundaries, falling agonisingly short of what would have been the fastest century in IPL history. His fearless assault completely dismantled Hyderabad’s bowling attack and laid the foundation for Rajasthan’s massive total of 243 for 8.

Even though Rajasthan slowed down considerably at the death, scoring only 63 runs in the final seven overs, the damage had already been done. If Suryavanshi lit up the night with the bat, Jofra Archer buried SunRisers Hyderabad with the ball.

The England fast bowler ripped through Hyderabad’s top order inside the powerplay, removing Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan in a devastating spell that effectively ended the chase before it truly began.

Kishan briefly threatened with a rapid 33 off 11 balls, but Archer’s early strikes had already shattered the backbone of Hyderabad’s batting lineup. Leg-spinner Yash Raj Punja then delivered another crucial blow by dismissing Heinrich Klaasen for 18, extinguishing any lingering hopes of a comeback.

At 87 for 5, the contest was virtually over.

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Salil Arora fought back with spirited knocks of 35 each, but Rajasthan’s bowling unit never allowed the game to drift. Ravindra Jadeja, Nandre Burger and impact substitute Sushant Mishra combined effectively to bowl SunRisers out for 196.

The contrast between the two innings was striking. Rajasthan attacked relentlessly from the outset, turning the match into a high-speed demolition job. Hyderabad, meanwhile, spent most of their chase trying to recover from early damage they never truly overcame.

And at the centre of it all stood a 15-year-old who appears almost untouched by pressure.

How else do you explain an innings like this in an IPL knockout game?

This is, after all, the same teenager who smashed 175 off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final earlier this year. The same teenager who skipped his Class 10 board exams while most students his age were battling exam stress.

An IPL Eliminator under lights in front of a packed crowd? Suryavanshi treated it like another evening in the nets.

After carefully negotiating a few early yorkers from Pat Cummins, he launched into full attack mode. Cummins, one of the world’s premier fast bowlers, was taken apart mercilessly as Suryavanshi dispatched half-volleys, slower balls and short deliveries alike into the stands.

By the end of the night, the teenager had smashed 65 sixes this season, surpassing Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in a single IPL edition.

Twelve of the 29 balls he faced disappeared over the ropes.

“Coaches told me to play the way I do in practice and enjoy the game,” Suryavanshi said later.

Simple advice. Almost impossibly difficult execution.

Pat Cummins’ decision to bowl first backfired spectacularly. For nearly half the innings, Rajasthan’s batting looked unstoppable.

Cummins himself endured a nightmare outing, conceding 64 runs — the most expensive spell ever recorded by a captain in an IPL playoff match.

When Suryavanshi finally fell for 97 in the eighth over, Rajasthan were already 103 for 2 and firmly in control.

Dhruv Jurel ensured the momentum continued, smashing a rapid half-century off just 20 balls before holing out immediately after reaching the milestone. Riyan Parag, despite struggling with a hamstring issue, chipped in with a quickfire 26 off 12 balls.

Still, Rajasthan’s finish exposed some lingering concerns. The lower middle order failed to fully capitalise on the platform, with Ravindra Jadeja, Donovan Ferreira and Dasun Shanaka unable to produce the late flourish many expected.

On a batting-friendly Mullanpur pitch and against a side known for outrageous run chases, 243 somehow felt slightly underwhelming by the end of the innings.

As it turned out, it was nowhere close to being chaseable.

Rajasthan Royals will now face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 on Friday, with a place in the IPL 2026 final at stake.

For SunRisers Hyderabad, the campaign ended in brutal fashion — dismantled in a knockout game by a teenager who already seems destined for cricketing superstardom.
