Flavio Bolsonaro Reportedly Leaves Brazil for US Following Presidential Election Loss

Flavio Bolsonaro, who lost Brazil’s presidential runoff election over the weekend, reportedly left the country for the United States on Tuesday, according to American media reports. His departure comes amid mounting legal challenges and his refusal to accept defeat in the election.

Reports by The New York Times, CNN and other US media outlets, citing unnamed American officials, said Bolsonaro had departed Brazil. His passports had been cancelled, but he had reportedly not handed over the documents as of Tuesday afternoon.

The US State Department said it would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family and permit them to enter the United States. However, it did not confirm whether they were travelling there or whether Bolsonaro had already arrived.

The reported departure comes as the 45-year-old politician faces investigations in several cases and is set to lose the parliamentary immunity associated with his legislative position.

Bolsonaro Faces Multiple Investigations
Among the cases involving Flavio Bolsonaro is a corruption investigation into the financing of a biopic about his father, former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.

Jair Bolsonaro is under house arrest over allegations that he plotted a coup. The legal troubles surrounding the former president and his family have added to the political uncertainty following the election.

According to The New York Times, Flavio Bolsonaro is also being investigated over alleged links to a Brazilian lawyer accused of laundering more than $1 billion through a suspected fraud scheme.

The investigations come as Bolsonaro faces growing political isolation after the election. Although he has challenged the outcome and vowed to pursue legal action, his party and allies have accepted the result.

Defeat by Lula Fuels Political Uncertainty
Flavio Bolsonaro was defeated by incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential runoff. He has refused to accept the result and indicated that he intends to contest it through legal channels.

However, the acceptance of the outcome by his party and political allies has weakened his position as he confronts legal scrutiny and the prospect of losing parliamentary immunity.

His brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, is based in the United States, where Flavio is now reportedly headed.

Argentina Denies Reports of Bolsonaro’s Arrival
Conflicting reports about Flavio Bolsonaro’s whereabouts also emerged on Tuesday, with some accounts suggesting that he had travelled to neighbouring Argentina.

Argentina’s security ministry and migration authorities denied that he had entered the country.

While US media reports cited unnamed officials to support claims that Bolsonaro had left Brazil, Washington’s statement on visas did not establish whether he had reached the United States.

His reported departure adds another dimension to the political fallout from Brazil’s presidential election, as the defeated candidate faces legal investigations and uncertainty over his political future.
