India secured a 1-0 series victory over Sri Lanka after the second Test ended in a dramatic draw in Colombo on Thursday. Despite enforcing the follow-on and needing just four wickets on the final day, India failed to complete the job as Sri Lanka’s Sonal Dinusha led a remarkable rearguard action.

Dinusha, playing only his third Test, produced another outstanding performance, scoring 103 in the first innings and remaining unbeaten on 133 in the second. He became only the third batter in Test history to score centuries in both innings while following on.

India had Sri Lanka on the back foot after bowling them out for 290 and enforcing the follow-on. However, Dinusha, Keshara Nuwantha and Lahiru Kumara frustrated the Indian attack for most of the final day. Sri Lanka eventually declared at 429/9 with around 40 minutes left before stumps, leaving India with too little time to chase the target.

Manav Suthar was the standout bowler for India, dismissing Nuwantha for 46 after the batter had faced 150 deliveries. But India could not find the remaining three wickets, allowing Sri Lanka to salvage a morale-boosting draw.

The result means India won the two-Test series 1-0, with Devdutt Padikkal earning Player of the Series honours after scoring two centuries. The series victory also gave Gautam Gambhir his first away Test series win as India’s head coach since taking charge in 2024.

However, the failure to win the second Test could prove costly in the World Test Championship cycle. India now need to win six of their remaining seven Tests to have a realistic chance of reaching the WTC Final, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

For Sri Lanka, Dinusha’s remarkable resistance was the defining moment of the Test. His unbeaten 133, combined with lengthy knocks from Nuwantha and Kumara, denied India what had appeared to be a certain victory and exposed the visitors’ inability to close out the match despite having complete control for much of the contest.

India captain Shubman Gill admitted the team had spent around 250 overs in the field but insisted there was little more they could have done. He praised Sri Lanka’s fightback and highlighted Suthar’s consistency as a major positive for India going forward.

Despite winning the series, India will leave Colombo with mixed feelings: Gambhir finally has his first overseas Test series triumph, but Dinusha’s extraordinary resistance has ensured the second Test feels far more like a missed opportunity than a celebration.
