India 402 all out (49.5 overs) beat Afghanistan 232 all out (44.3 overs) by 170 runs in Lucknow. Shubman Gill 154, Ishan Kishan 125; Arshdeep Singh 3/45.

Shubman Gill overcame brutal heat and physical discomfort to register his maiden ODI century as captain and guide India to a commanding 170-run victory over Afghanistan in the second ODI at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium on Wednesday, sealing the three-match series 2-0.

In oppressive conditions that tested players and spectators alike, India piled up 402 before bowling Afghanistan out for 232 in 44.3 overs. The scorching temperatures forced the BCCI to allow an additional drinks break, while players regularly relied on ice towels and extended hydration stops throughout the contest.

Asked to bat first, India made a change at the top of the order, promoting Yashasvi Jaiswal to open alongside Rohit Sharma, with Gill moving down to No. 3. The experiment yielded little success as Jaiswal fell for four, but Rohit looked fluent during his 48 before being deceived by a Rashid Khan googly.

Gill then took complete control of the innings. The India captain combined elegance with authority, finding boundaries all around the ground while keeping the scoreboard moving effortlessly. He shared a match-defining 224-run partnership for the third wicket with Ishan Kishan, who ended a long wait for an ODI century with a sparkling 125 off 79 balls.

Kishan accelerated dramatically after reaching his half-century, peppering the boundaries with powerful pulls and inventive strokeplay. His innings featured a pair of audacious one-handed sixes as he notched up his first ODI hundred since his double century against Bangladesh in 2022.

Gill, meanwhile, battled increasingly difficult conditions. The 26-year-old required treatment for cramps and back discomfort during his innings but continued to anchor the batting effort. He eventually reached his ninth ODI century and his first as India’s captain before falling for a superb 154 in the 43rd over.

India suffered a late collapse after Gill’s dismissal and were bowled out with one ball remaining despite appearing set for an even bigger total. Left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote was Afghanistan’s standout bowler with 4/76, while Rashid Khan claimed three wickets.

Afghanistan never looked capable of threatening the massive target. Rahmanullah Gurbaz struck a brisk 41, while Sediqullah Atal showed resistance before being trapped by Washington Sundar. Fatigue became a major factor for the visitors after spending nearly 50 overs in the field, and middle-order batter Darwish Rasooli was forced to retire hurt with cramps and a hamstring issue.

Arshdeep Singh led India’s bowling effort with figures of 3/45 as Afghanistan were eventually dismissed for 232, handing the hosts an emphatic victory and an unbeatable lead in the series.

The teams will now travel to Chennai for the final ODI, where India will seek a clean sweep while Afghanistan look to avoid a whitewash.
