Guru Randhawa’s new song Azul has sparked widespread attention—and controversy—over its depiction of schoolgirls.
In the music video, Randhawa plays a photographer visiting an all-girls school for their class photo. What is normally a routine school moment has been criticized as “sexualised, pornographic, and problematic.” Actress Sonam Kapoor has reportedly agreed with these concerns.
A news publication highlighted on Instagram how the video not only sexualizes schoolgirls but also compares them to alcohol brands. The post quickly went viral and caught Sonam Kapoor’s attention, with the actress reportedly liking it.
The video has drawn backlash from many women online, who argue that it promotes harassment and sexualization of minors—even though the performers are adults portraying school-aged characters. One Instagram user wrote, “It’s 2025, and people still don’t understand the implications of such content. School kids are consuming this message that sexualizing girls is okay!” Another commented, “Cinema and music have a significant impact on society, and videos like this risk normalizing harmful behavior.”
Guru Randhawa has not publicly responded to the criticism. However, he has continued to share posts celebrating the song’s trending success in India. On August 9, he posted a photo with the lead dancer from the video, which was liked by Tamannaah Bhatia, and earlier clips have received likes from Varun Dhawan and Mrunal Thakur. While it is possible that the actors have not watched the video itself, their reactions have drawn public attention.
The song has thus received both praise and criticism. Randhawa has thanked fans for their support, but his response to the backlash remains limited, and comments on his Instagram posts have now been restricted.
