Widespread and extremely heavy rain is expected to continue over central India and the west coast of India over the next 3-4 days, India Meteorological Department (IMD)said on Tuesday.
On Sunday, several parts of Chhattisgarh, Konkan, Goa, Vidarbha and Odisha recorded extremely heavy rain.
The monsoon trough is active and lying south of its normal position. It will continue to remain so during the next 4-5 days. A well-marked low-pressure area is lying over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Odisha, north Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal.
It is likely to concentrate into a depression during the next 24 hours and move west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
An east-west shear zone is running over north peninsular India. It is likely to persist during the next 3-4 days. Under the influence of these systems, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rain and thunderstorm or lightning is very likely over Gangetic West Bengal during till August 11; Jharkhand on August 10 and 11; Odisha till August 12; Assam & Meghalaya on August 8 and 9 and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura till August 12.
Isolated very heavy rainfall also likely over Odisha on August 10. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm) is also likely over Odisha on August 9. Widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rain and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa till August 12; Gujarat till August 11 and over Marathwada during August 8 to 10.
Isolated/scattered extremely heavy rainfall also likely over Vidarbha on August 9; Konkan, Goa and ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra till August 10; Gujarat on August 9 and 10 and over Saurashtra and Kutch on August 10. Widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rain and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over southeast Rajasthan till August 12; East Uttar Pradesh & Himachal Pradesh on August 11; West Uttar Pradesh on August 12. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Uttarakhand on August 10 and over East Rajasthan on August 12.
“The well-marked low is over the Odisha coast. Already several parts of central India have started recording extremely heavy rain. Over the next 2-3 days the system will move over central India bringing a lot of rain up to Gujarat coast. The system is expected to intensify further,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, national weather forecasting centre, IMD.
Between Sunday and Monday, in Chhattisgarh, Katekalyan recorded 36cm, Bastanar (dist Bastar) 20cm, Bijapur (dist Bijapur) 20cm, Chhindgarh (dist Sukma) 18cm, Usoor (dist Bijapur) recorded 15cm rain. In Konkan,: Lanja (dist Ratnagiri) recorded 29cm, Shriwardhan (dist Raigad) 25cm, Dapoli_agri (dist Ratnagiri) 22cm, Mhasla (dist Raigad) 21cm, Chiplun (dist Ratnagiri) 21cm, Guhagarh (dist Ratnagiri) 21cm among others. Over Odisha, Nawrangpur:Dabugaon recorded 23 cm, Papadahandi-19 cm, Koshagumuda-15cm, Koraput: Kotpad-19cm among others.
“There are some indications that the system may intensify into a depression. We are monitoring. When it moves there will be heavy rain over the areas it covers,” explained Ananda Kumar Das, in-charge of the weather bureau’s cyclone monitoring division.
