Hockey World Cup: India Open Campaign With Convincing 3-1 Win Over Wales

India made a winning start to their Hockey World Cup campaign, defeating Wales 3-1 in their opening Group D match in Amstelveen on Saturday, August 15, giving the team a memorable Independence Day celebration.

The Indian side took time to settle into the contest, with Wales enjoying early possession and creating the first notable chance. India soon found their rhythm, however, and their penalty-corner execution proved decisive.

Sanjay opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a powerful drag-flick. Three minutes later, captain Harmanpreet Singh doubled the advantage by converting another penalty corner with a low strike.

India carried their 2-0 lead into the second quarter and maintained control of the contest. Wales attempted to respond, with Pritchard going close after getting past the advancing goalkeeper, but his effort struck the post.

India continued to look dangerous after the interval and added a third goal in the 43rd minute. Harmanpreet again stepped up from a penalty corner, sending a fierce low drag-flick into the net to complete his brace.

With a three-goal advantage, India managed the closing stages effectively. Wales eventually pulled one back in the 56th minute when Sam Welsh converted a penalty stroke awarded after a video review.

Wales could not build on the late goal, while India remained threatening on the counter and created further opportunities before seeing out the match comfortably.

The victory gives Harmanpreet Singh’s side an important early boost in Group D. India will next face England on Monday before taking on Pakistan in the much-anticipated group-stage encounter.
