Imran Khan Returns Home After Mumbai Protest Detention; Lekha Washington Says ‘We Are Fine’
Actor Imran Khan has returned home after being detained by Mumbai Police during a protest at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday. His girlfriend, Lekha Washington, took to social media to share updates, assuring followers that everyone was safe but claiming that police restrictions forced them to walk home instead of using a vehicle.
Lekha Washington Shares Update After Detention
Lekha posted videos on social media describing the situation following the detention. In one clip, she said the police were not allowing the group to leave in a car or any other vehicle, leaving them to walk along the road.
In another video, she reassured concerned followers that everyone was safe and making their way home.
Her updates came after the incident attracted attention online, with supporters seeking information about the actor and others who had participated in the demonstration.
Zayn Marie Khan Shares Picture From Police Van
Imran attended the protest alongside Lekha and his cousin, Zayn Marie Khan. Zayn shared a photograph from inside a police van, showing herself seated beside the couple.
She captioned the picture, “INQUILAAB ZINDABAAD.”
In the photograph, Imran appeared to be smiling and making a peace sign. Zayn also posted a video in which she asked the actor whether he had ever been to jail. Imran responded with a smile, suggesting that the possibility could not be ruled out given the circumstances.
Imran Khan Explains His Participation
Speaking to the media before his detention, Imran said he had joined the demonstration as a resident of Mumbai and was not representing any political party or organisation.
The actor said he wanted to understand why citizens’ freedom of movement was being restricted and why people were allegedly being prevented from expressing their views.
Imran explained that his presence at the protest was a personal decision and that he had come as an ordinary citizen rather than as a representative of any organisation.
He also said he was not there to make demands but to understand the circumstances surrounding the restrictions on the demonstration.
Why Were Protesters Detained at August Kranti Maidan?
The detentions took place during a protest organised in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) call for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Mumbai Police said more than 400 people had been detained during the demonstration. According to the police, organisers had not obtained permission for the gathering, and directions issued by the Bombay High Court restricted protests to Azad Maidan.
CJP workers, however, disputed the police’s account, claiming that they had emailed the Mumbai Police seeking permission but had received no response.
The incident has drawn attention to the dispute over permission for public demonstrations in Mumbai, while Imran’s return home and Lekha’s social media updates have provided reassurance to those concerned about the group following the detention.
