IND vs SA: Early Sunset Forces Tea-Before-Lunch Twist in Guwahati Test.
The second Test between India and South Africa at Barsapara Stadium, Guwahati, is set to be as much a battle against the sun as it is between bat and ball. Hosting a men’s Test for the first time, the venue faces unusually early sunsets due to its far-eastern location, prompting match officials to adjust the schedule—including the rare move of serving tea before lunch.
Racing Against the Sun
Guwahati, at 90°E longitude, experiences sunrise and sunset earlier than most Indian cities, despite following IST. To maximise playing time, the Test will start at 9:00 am (instead of the usual 9:30 am) and finish by 4:00 pm. The revised session timings are:
9:00–11:00 am: Opening session
11:00–11:20 am: Tea break
11:20 am–1:20 pm: Second session
1:20–2:00 pm: Lunch break
2:00–4:00 pm: Final session
This approach, previously used in Ranji Trophy matches in eastern India, ensures minimal overs are lost to fading light.
Players Adjust to Unusual Schedule
India batter Sai Sudharsan welcomed the change. “I don’t mind tea before lunch; I already drink tea at lunch. It’s new, but exciting,” he said. South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj also saw the logic: “Sunlight becomes a factor, so they’re trying to maximise playing time. We respect the rules and are ready to compete.” Proteas batter Aiden Markram, however, preferred tradition: “Test cricket should start at 10 a.m. with lunch followed by tea, but we adapt to the conditions.”
India Seek Bounce Back
The timing twist comes at a critical juncture for India, reeling from a 30-run defeat in the opening Test at Eden Gardens. Chasing 124, India were bowled out for 93, highlighting recurring struggles on turning tracks. With captain Shubman Gill still recovering from a neck injury, vice-captain Rishabh Pant is expected to lead the side. Sai Sudharsan could also feature in the XI if Gill is ruled out, adding further intrigue.
Beyond the early sunsets and unconventional schedule, India’s challenge is clear: regroup, adapt, and deliver the performance required to level the series in Guwahati.
