Kieron Pollard Withdraws From SA20 After Mumbai Indians Head Coach Appointment
Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has informed Joburg Super Kings that he will not be available for the upcoming SA20 season, just a day after being appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2027, according to a Cricbuzz report.
Pollard was acquired by the Johannesburg-based franchise for R1.5 million during the SA20 auction on October 7. However, he has now withdrawn from the tournament, with Joburg Super Kings confirming that they will search for a replacement.
The decision follows Mumbai Indians’ announcement on October 24 that Pollard would be promoted from batting coach to head coach. The development is particularly notable given that Joburg Super Kings are owned by the Chennai Super Kings group, while Mumbai Indians’ owners also operate MI Cape Town in the SA20. Pollard had previously represented MI Cape Town in the competition.
The 39-year-old has enjoyed a long and successful association with Mumbai Indians, winning five IPL titles with the franchise during his playing career. He retired from the IPL after the 2022 season and subsequently continued working with the team as batting coach. His withdrawal from SA20 will allow him to concentrate on his new coaching responsibilities ahead of IPL 2027.
Before Pollard informed Joburg Super Kings of his decision, a Mumbai Indians source had clarified that the franchise had not objected to him playing for another team in a different league.
“It’s up to KP on the matter. We have given no instructions,” the source told Cricbuzz.
CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan subsequently confirmed Pollard’s withdrawal. “He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings,” Viswanathan said, adding that the franchise would now look for a replacement.
Pollard Replaces Mahela Jayawardene as Mumbai Indians Head Coach
Pollard’s appointment comes after Mahela Jayawardene’s departure from the Mumbai Indians head coach position. Jayawardene led the franchise to three IPL titles during his first stint between 2017 and 2022 before returning for a second spell.
According to reports, Pollard’s elevation had been under consideration for several days before the official announcement. The Mumbai Indians management reportedly finalised his appointment three to four days earlier and invited him to Mumbai for discussions on Thursday. His selection was confirmed following further deliberations.
Pollard’s stature as a franchise legend and his longstanding relationship with Mumbai Indians were among the key factors behind the decision. His experience and standing within the dressing room, including among senior players, are expected to be important as he takes on his first head coaching assignment with the franchise.
Having won five IPL titles as a player with Mumbai Indians, Pollard now faces a new challenge as he prepares to lead the team into the 2027 season.
The fifth edition of the SA20 is scheduled to take place from January 17 to February 21, 2027. Joburg Super Kings will now have to find a replacement for Pollard ahead of the tournament.
