Heavy rainfall lasting nearly seven hours from Monday night to early Tuesday morning flooded large parts of Kolkata, according to police and government officials.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned on Monday that a low-pressure trough moving north over Kolkata and the South 24 Parganas district could bring heavy rainfall within 24 hours.

The weather office also indicated that similar showers might occur around September 25, prompting Durga Puja organisers to remain on high alert. “We have received emergency instructions to operate drainage pumps to clear the waterlogged streets,” said an official from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
