Kolkata RG Kar Hospital Lift Tragedy: Man Dies from Ruptured Lungs and Heart, Five Detained

A man, Arup Bandopadhyay, died after being trapped for over an hour in an elevator at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. Following the incident, Tala police detained five people for questioning in connection with his death.

Police Action

The police registered an FIR under sections related to culpable homicide based on a complaint filed by Arup’s father, Amal Bandopadhyay. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the accident and administrative lapses at the hospital.

Injuries and Post-Mortem Findings

The preliminary post-mortem report revealed fractures in Arup’s ribs, hands, and legs, along with ruptures in the lungs, heart, and liver, which led to his death.

How the Tragedy Occurred

According to hospital officials and the victim’s family, Arup got trapped when the elevator malfunctioned. Reports suggest:

No elevator operator or supporting staff was present at the time.
The elevator reportedly went up and down unexpectedly after a button was pressed.
Arup and two others attempted to exit, but the collapsible gate caused him to get stuck between the elevator and the wall.

Saptarshi Chattopadhyay, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, acknowledged the administrative lapse due to the absence of staff during the incident.

Background on RG Kar Hospital

The hospital has previously been in the national spotlight:

In August 2024, a female doctor was raped and murdered on the hospital premises.
Investigations later revealed financial irregularities, with suspicion that the doctor had discovered some of these issues.
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, accused of masterminding the financial fraud, was arrested by the CBI and is currently in jail.

The investigation into Arup Bandopadhyay’s death is ongoing, with authorities examining both technical failures in the elevator and administrative lapses at the hospital.
