Kremlin Hopes for Another Putin-Trump Summit Amid Tensions.
The Kremlin on Monday expressed hope that another summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump could take place once preparations are complete.
Putin and Trump last met in August in Alaska, discussing a potential resolution to end the war in Ukraine. Plans for a Budapest summit were announced last month but were canceled by Trump, who said the timing “did not feel right.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the timing of a new meeting is uncertain. “We can hardly predict now when these conditions will arise. Although, of course, we are all interested in these conditions occurring sooner rather than later,” he said. Both sides have agreed that the summit would require thorough preparation to be productive.
Trump had previously expressed frustration with Putin, saying, “Every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don’t go anywhere.” On October 22, he imposed Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia, targeting oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil for the first time during his second term.
On Sunday, Trump indicated that US Republicans are working on legislation to sanction any country doing business with Russia. Peskov warned that such a bill would be viewed very negatively by Moscow.
Separately, Trump has also raised tariffs on Indian goods, citing India’s purchases of Russian oil, a move Moscow described as illegal trade pressure.
