Brief Scores: Rajasthan Royals 205/8 (20 overs) beat Mumbai Indians 169 all out (19.1 overs) by 36 runs.
Archer Powers RR Into Playoffs, Ends PBKS And KKR Hopes
Jofra Archer delivered a sensational all-round performance as Rajasthan Royals stormed into the IPL playoffs with a commanding 36-run win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
The victory not only secured Rajasthan’s playoff berth but also officially knocked Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders out of the tournament.
Released by Mumbai after an injury-hit stint that saw him play just five matches across three seasons, Archer returned to haunt his former franchise in style. The England pacer smashed a quickfire 32 off just 15 balls late in the innings before dismantling Mumbai’s batting line-up with figures of 3/17.
Mumbai’s downfall came from familiar problems — a disastrous powerplay and poor death bowling. They lost four wickets inside the first six overs while RR piled on 73 runs in the final four overs to push the total beyond 200.
Archer’s Early Blitz Breaks Mumbai
Archer struck immediately with the ball, dismissing Rohit Sharma for a duck — the 19th duck of Rohit’s IPL career, equalling the unwanted tournament record.
He then cleaned up Naman Dhir with a peach of a delivery as Mumbai slumped to 18/2 in the third over. Wickets continued to tumble with Ryan Rickelton falling to Nandre Burger and Tilak Varma bowled by Brijesh Sharma, leaving MI reeling at 38/4 in just 5.1 overs.
Suryakumar, Hardik Fight Back
Despite the collapse, Suryakumar Yadav attempted to revive the chase with a counter-attacking innings. After a cautious start — including a painful blow to the face from a ricocheted full toss — Surya shifted gears against the RR spinners.
Alongside Will Jacks, he stitched together a rapid 63-run stand off 38 balls to keep Mumbai alive in the chase. Jacks’ dismissal brought Hardik Pandya to the crease, and the MI skipper responded with an aggressive cameo filled with towering sixes and entertaining strokeplay.
With 59 needed from the final five overs, the contest appeared evenly poised. But RR captain Riyan Parag turned once again to Archer — and the move proved decisive.
Archer removed Hardik at a crucial moment before RR tightened the screws. Surya’s dismissal shortly afterwards effectively ended Mumbai’s resistance as Rajasthan wrapped up victory comfortably.
RR’s Surprise Moves Pay Off
Earlier, Rajasthan’s innings featured several tactical surprises. After early wickets of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Parag, RR promoted Dasun Shanaka ahead of Donovan Ferreira and Ravindra Jadeja.
The move stabilised the innings through a brisk partnership with Dhruv Jurel. But the biggest surprise came later when Archer was sent ahead of Jadeja — a move that initially raised eyebrows both online and inside the stadium.
Instead, Archer’s explosive hitting completely shifted momentum in RR’s favour and proved to be the game-changing masterstroke.
RR coach Kumar Sangakkara later admitted the move was a calculated gamble aimed at maximising runs before the final overs.
Rajasthan now head to New Chandigarh for the Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, carrying momentum and renewed belief.
