Mumbai Indians Announce Major Coaching Overhaul Ahead Of IPL 2027, Robin Uthappa And T Dilip Among Four New Appointments

Mumbai Indians have reshaped their coaching department ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, bringing in four new faces as the franchise looks to rebuild following a disappointing 2026 campaign. Former India batter Robin Uthappa, New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan, former India fielding coach T Dilip and Dhawal Kulkarni have been appointed to key coaching positions.

The five-time IPL champions will now operate under head coach Kieron Pollard, who took charge after Mahela Jayawardene stepped down from the position. The latest appointments are part of a wider restructuring aimed at strengthening the team’s support staff and improving its performance in the upcoming season.

Under the new arrangement, Uthappa will serve as batting coach, McClenaghan will oversee the bowling unit, Dilip will take responsibility for fielding, and Kulkarni will work as development bowling coach.

Three of the four appointments are familiar faces at the Mumbai franchise, with Uthappa, McClenaghan and Kulkarni having previously represented the team as players.

Robin Uthappa, McClenaghan And Dhawal Kulkarni Return To MI
Uthappa is returning to Mumbai Indians nearly 20 years after his appearance for the franchise during the inaugural IPL season in 2008. He scored 320 runs in 14 matches before moving on to other teams during his IPL career.

The former India international played a crucial role in Chennai Super Kings’ 2021 title-winning campaign and ended his IPL career with 4,952 runs from 205 matches. He also won the Orange Cap in 2014 after scoring 660 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders. Uthappa was part of India’s victorious squad at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.

McClenaghan, meanwhile, enjoyed a successful stint with Mumbai between 2015 and 2019. The left-arm New Zealand fast bowler picked up 71 wickets in 56 IPL appearances and was part of three title-winning campaigns in 2015, 2017 and 2019. He was also associated with the franchise’s wider squad during its 2020 championship season.

Kulkarni has also returned to familiar territory. He represented Mumbai Indians between 2008 and 2013 before making another appearance for the franchise from 2020 to 2021. Across his IPL career, he claimed 86 wickets in 92 matches and featured in Mumbai’s title-winning squads in 2013 and 2020.

In his new role, Kulkarni will concentrate on developing young Indian fast bowlers, helping the franchise strengthen its domestic bowling resources through continuous training and guidance.

T Dilip Joins Mumbai Indians After Coaching India
T Dilip’s appointment brings international coaching experience to Mumbai’s revamped support staff. He joins the franchise after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided against extending his contract with the Indian men’s team.

His final assignment with India was the 2025 tour of England. During his tenure, Dilip was associated with India’s coaching group during several major tournament victories, including the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

He will now oversee Mumbai Indians’ fielding department, bringing his experience of working with international players into the IPL setup.

Mumbai Indians Restructure Coaching Staff After Disappointing Season
The latest appointments follow several significant departures from Mumbai’s coaching department.

Bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, along with fielding coach Carl Hopkinson, have recently exited the franchise. The changes also followed Jayawardene’s departure as head coach, with former West Indies captain Pollard moving into the top coaching position after previously serving as batting coach.

Mumbai Indians are now banking on a combination of former players and experienced coaches to strengthen their support system.

After missing the playoffs in IPL 2026, the franchise will be keen to make a stronger comeback next season. The revamped coaching structure is expected to focus on batting consistency, bowling development and improved fielding as Mumbai prepare for their IPL 2027 campaign.
