Sergey Lavrov Arrives In US For G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting In Atlanta

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in the United States to participate in the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, according to a report by state-run news agency TASS on Friday.

The two-day meeting of representatives from the world’s major economies is taking place amid several ongoing international tensions, including the US-Iran conflict and the continuing war in Ukraine. The gathering is also being held against the backdrop of persistently high oil prices and diplomatic deadlocks on multiple fronts.

G20 Talks Ahead Of US Midterm Elections
The discussions in Atlanta come just days before the crucial US midterm elections, adding to the political and diplomatic significance of the meeting.

The foreign ministers’ gathering is also expected to help prepare the ground for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December in Miami. The summit will be hosted at President Donald Trump’s Doral resort.

Lavrov To Raise Issue Of International Sanctions
Moscow said on Thursday that Lavrov would use his address at the meeting to speak out against international sanctions. Russia has repeatedly criticised restrictions imposed by Western countries and has called for changes to the international sanctions regime.

Lavrov’s visit also comes ahead of another round of discussions involving officials from Russia, Ukraine and the United States. The planned talks are aimed at exploring possible ways to bring an end to the ongoing Ukraine war.
