Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in India on Saturday for a five-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties with New Delhi, marking his first foreign trip since assuming office as a civilian leader.
He is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with discussions with President Droupadi Murmu and representatives from the business community during the visit.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit began with a warm welcome in Bihar, where Min Aung Hlaing arrived before traveling to the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Bodh Gaya. The Myanmar leader is expected to start his tour there, a site closely associated with the Buddha’s enlightenment.
The Indian government said the visit reflects long-standing cultural and civilisational links between the two countries as well as ongoing cooperation across multiple sectors.
During the trip, discussions are expected to focus on expanding political, economic and strategic engagement, with both sides aiming to deepen trade and investment ties. The Myanmar leader is also set to travel to Mumbai for business-related engagements.
Bilateral trade between India and Myanmar stood at around $1.95 billion in 2025–26, according to official figures cited by New Delhi.
Min Aung Hlaing, who took over as Myanmar’s civilian president in April after previously leading the country following the 2021 military coup, was also attended by representatives from several regional countries at his swearing-in ceremony.
