Nepal Avalanche: 2 Bodies Recovered, 14 Climbers And Support Staff Missing

At least two bodies have been recovered after an avalanche struck Himlung Himal in Nepal’s Manang district, with 14 people, including climbers and support staff, still reported missing, according to The Kathmandu Post.

The avalanche hit the 7,126-metre peak in the Nar Phu region, prompting authorities and expedition agencies to coordinate efforts to assess the situation and locate those unaccounted for.

Rishi Bhandari, general secretary of the Expedition Operators Association Nepal, confirmed the incident. He said two of those reported missing were associated with Imagine Nepal Pvt Ltd, while the others were linked to Himalayan Holidays Nepal.

Ram Krishna Lamichhane, director general of Nepal’s Department of Tourism, said authorities were closely monitoring developments. Officials are working to collect more information and coordinate search and rescue operations in the affected high-altitude area.

The incident comes amid heightened concerns over extreme weather in Nepal’s mountainous regions. Authorities have been warning of possible avalanches and flash floods since September 22, following heavy snowfall and persistent rainfall across several high-altitude districts.

The latest avalanche also comes weeks after a major disaster in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, where an avalanche-triggered flash flood reportedly killed nearly 1,400 people.
