State-run oil marketing companies on Friday raised petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre each, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to adopt austerity measures and reduce dependence on imports to conserve foreign exchange.

Following the hike, petrol prices in Delhi increased from ₹94.77 to ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel rates rose from ₹87.67 to ₹90.67 per litre.

The increase varied across cities because of differences in local taxes and levies. In Kolkata, petrol prices climbed by ₹3.29 to ₹108.74 per litre, while Mumbai saw a rise of ₹3.14, taking the rate to ₹106.68 per litre. In Chennai, petrol prices increased by ₹2.83 to ₹103.67 per litre.

Diesel prices also rose sharply. In Kolkata, diesel now costs ₹95.13 per litre after a ₹3.11 increase. Mumbai recorded a similar ₹3.11 hike, pushing the price to ₹93.14 per litre, while Chennai saw diesel prices rise by ₹2.86 to ₹95.25 per litre.

Union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri had earlier indicated that a fuel price revision was likely. Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry event in New Delhi on Tuesday, Puri said the government would eventually need to take a call on increasing prices of petroleum products such as petrol and diesel.

His remarks followed Modi’s appeal on Sunday asking citizens to conserve both energy and foreign exchange amid rising import costs and global supply concerns, a message the prime minister repeated again on Monday.
