PM Arrives in Jordan on Two-Day Visit, Holds Talks with King Abdullah II Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jordan on Monday for a two-day visit, during which he will hold talks with King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan received PM Modi at Amman airport. The Jordan visit is the first leg of the Prime Minister’s four-day, three-nation tour, which will also take him to Ethiopia and Oman.

Sharing a message on social media, PM Modi thanked his Jordanian counterpart for the warm reception and expressed confidence that the visit would strengthen bilateral ties.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister will hold a one-on-one meeting with King Abdullah II, followed by delegation-level talks covering cooperation across key sectors.

On Tuesday, PM Modi and King Abdullah II are scheduled to jointly address an India–Jordan business event, with participation from leading business leaders of both countries. The Prime Minister will also interact with the Indian community in Jordan and, subject to weather conditions, visit Petra with the Crown Prince. The ancient city shares historic trade links with India.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this is PM Modi’s first full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan. He had previously transited through the country in February 2018 while travelling to Palestine. The MEA noted that while the 2018 visit was officially a transit, the Prime Minister was accorded exceptional courtesies by King Abdullah II.

The current visit marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Jordan in 37 years, the MEA said.

India and Jordan maintain strong economic ties, with India emerging as Jordan’s third-largest trading partner. Bilateral trade stands at around USD 2.8 billion, with Jordan being a key supplier of fertilisers, particularly phosphates and potash, to India.

Jordan is also home to an Indian diaspora of over 17,500 people, employed across sectors including textiles, construction and manufacturing.
