Pro-Anant Singh Posters Surface in Mokama Ahead of Bihar Assembly Results.
Posters in support of Anant Singh, the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) candidate from Mokama, have emerged in his constituency ahead of the Bihar Assembly Election results, despite him being in jail in a murder case.
One poster read:
“Jail ka faatak tootega, hamara sher chootega”
(The prison gates will break, our lion will be released)
Singh, a former Bihar MLA and a veteran political figure with a stronghold in Mokama, was arrested on November 2 in connection with the murder of Dular Chand Yadav, a Jan Suraaj Party supporter. Yadav, a former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) associate turned gangster-politician, was killed while campaigning for Priyadarshi Piyush in Mokama.
The post-mortem report confirmed that Yadav died of cardiorespiratory failure due to shock caused by injuries to the heart and lungs from a hard and blunt object, according to SSP Patna, Kartikeya Sharma. Following the incident, a murder case was registered, and three people — Anant Singh, Manikant Thakur, and Ranjeet Ram — were arrested.
Singh has a long political career, with 28 criminal cases to his name. He has won the Mokama Assembly seat five times, making his debut in 2005 and retaining the seat in 2010 as a JDU candidate.
In 2015, Singh left JDU after Nitish Kumar allied with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD, contesting as an Independent and defeating the JDU candidate. In 2020, he joined RJD and won again. He lost his Assembly membership in 2022 following a conviction in an arms case, after which his wife, Neelam Devi, won the bye-election to retain Mokama. Singh has now returned to JDU.
