As India gear up to face New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final on March 8, cricket fans from across the country are rushing to Ahmedabad to witness the high-stakes clash.
With the title decider set to be played at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, airlines and railways have begun adding extra services to manage the surge in travel demand. Airlines including Air India Express and Akasa Air on Friday announced special flights to Ahmedabad to help fans reach the city for the much-anticipated final. Demand for travel typically spikes whenever India reach a major global final, leading to soaring airfares and train tickets selling out within minutes.
Despite the higher prices and limited availability, thousands of supporters are expected to travel long distances to cheer for the team in person. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket venue, is likely to witness a packed house for the championship clash.
To accommodate the rush, airlines have started increasing seat capacity and are closely monitoring booking trends. Both carriers indicated they could add more services if demand continues to rise closer to match day.
Air India Express has announced additional flights to Ahmedabad from major cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
“To facilitate cricket fans travelling to witness the final, the airline will operate additional flights to Ahmedabad from Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad. These flights have been scheduled in response to the sharp increase in demand as fans across the country plan to attend the match,” the airline said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Akasa Air will run special direct flights between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on March 8 and March 9, supplementing its regular services on the route. The airline is also planning to add a cricket-themed experience for passengers travelling to the final.
Through its SkyScore feature, Akasa Air passengers will be able to track live match updates even while they are in the air. The airline said it also plans to create a festive on-board atmosphere for fans heading to the big game.
Fans Gear Up For IND vs NZ Final
Apart from air travel, the Indian Railways has also stepped in to handle the demand. Western Railway has announced two special trains between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, including one scheduled to run on March 8, to help supporters reach the city in time for the final.
The excitement surrounding the match is understandable. India head into the final with a chance to achieve a rare milestone in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. After defeating England national cricket team in a thrilling semi-final — where Sanju Samson’s explosive innings powered India to a massive total of 254 — the hosts are now just one win away from defending the title on home soil.
However, New Zealand national cricket team arrive in the final with strong momentum of their own. The Black Caps produced a commanding performance against South Africa national cricket team in the semi-final at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After restricting South Africa to 168, openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen powered the chase with a blistering partnership, sealing a nine-wicket win in just 12.5 overs.
With both teams in strong form and the stadium expected to be packed, the final promises to be a high-voltage contest as fans descend on Ahmedabad for what could be another memorable chapter in T20 World Cup history. 🏏✈️
