Diwali 2026: 3 Traditional Lakshmi Puja Rituals To Welcome Wealth And Prosperity

Diwali is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm across India, with families preparing their homes to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, who is worshipped as the symbol of wealth, good fortune and prosperity. From decorating homes with flowers and colourful rangolis to lighting diyas and performing evening prayers, the festival marks a time for spiritual renewal, happiness and fresh beginnings.

Among the many traditions associated with Diwali, Lakshmi Puja holds a special place. Devotees seek the blessings of the Goddess for financial growth, peace and stability. Alongside the customary prayers and offerings, several traditional rituals are believed to carry special significance in bringing positive energy and abundance into the household.

According to astrologer Prashant Kapoor, founder of AstroKapoor, certain simple practices performed during Lakshmi Puja can make the occasion more meaningful. He highlights that prosperity should not be measured only by financial gains but also by the ability to maintain wealth, make thoughtful decisions and enjoy peace in life.

Here are three traditional rituals suggested for Lakshmi Puja this Diwali.

1. Keep 11 Gomti Chakras In Your Locker

Gomti Chakras are naturally occurring shell-like formations found in the Gomti River. In Hindu traditions, they are considered auspicious and are associated with Goddess Lakshmi, wealth and good fortune.

Keeping Gomti Chakras after Diwali Puja is traditionally believed to attract prosperity and financial stability.

How to perform the ritual:

  • Take 11 Gomti Chakras and clean them gently.
  • Place them in front of Goddess Lakshmi during the puja.
  • Apply a small amount of Kumkum and offer prayers.
  • Wrap the chakras in a fresh red or yellow cloth.
  • After completing the puja, keep the bundle safely inside your locker.

2. Offer Turmeric Roots To Goddess Lakshmi

Turmeric has long been considered a symbol of purity, auspiciousness and prosperity in Hindu religious ceremonies. Its yellow colour is also associated with Jupiter, or Brihaspati, which holds importance in Vedic astrology.

Jupiter is traditionally linked with wisdom, financial growth, knowledge and opportunities. Offering turmeric during Lakshmi Puja is therefore regarded as an auspicious practice.

How to perform the ritual:

  • Take five whole turmeric roots.
  • Place them on a clean yellow cloth before Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Offer flowers and Kumkum.
  • Pray for financial progress, stability and prosperity.
  • Once the puja is complete, place the turmeric roots in your home temple.

3. Place A Silver Coin In Rice During Lakshmi Puja

Rice and silver are considered important elements in Hindu worship. Unbroken rice grains, known as Akshat, symbolise completeness and auspiciousness and are commonly used in religious offerings.

Silver, on the other hand, is traditionally associated with the Moon in Vedic astrology, which represents the mind and emotions. The combination of rice and a silver coin is believed to symbolise abundance, stability and positive energy.

How to perform the ritual:

  • Take a clean silver coin and some unbroken rice grains.
  • Place the coin in a bowl filled with rice before Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Apply a little Kumkum to the coin.
  • Offer prayers and seek blessings for prosperity and peace.
  • After the puja, keep the silver coin in your locker. The rice can be reused in the kitchen.

LAKSHMI PUJA: A PRAYER FOR MORE THAN MATERIAL WEALTH

Diwali is not just a celebration of wealth and prosperity but also an occasion to reflect on happiness, contentment and financial responsibility. The traditional rituals associated with Goddess Lakshmi encourage devotees to welcome abundance while seeking peace, stability and positive beginnings.

These three practices, recommended by astrologer Prashant Kapoor, can be incorporated into Diwali celebrations as part of one’s spiritual traditions. While their significance comes from religious and astrological beliefs, the festival ultimately reminds us that true prosperity is a combination of material security, wisdom, harmony and inner happiness.
