“Rajnath Singh Sparks Debate With Remark: ‘SIndh May Rejoin India; Borders Can Change’”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that while Sindh is not part of India today, it remains intrinsically linked to the country through deep civilisational ties — and suggested that borders can change in the future.

Speaking at an event, Singh recalled former Home Minister LK Advani’s reflections on the cultural and religious significance of Sindh, which became part of Pakistan during the 1947 Partition. Advani had said that Sindhi Hindus of his generation could never fully reconcile with the separation, given the sacred association of the community with the Indus River.

Quoting Advani, Singh said, “Many Muslims in Sindh also believed that the water of the Indus was no less sacred than the Aab-e-Zamzam of Mecca.” He added, “Today, Sindh may not be part of India, but civilisationally it will always remain so.”

The minister went a step further, saying, “As far as land is concerned, borders can change. Who knows — perhaps one day Sindh may return to India. The people of Sindh, who revere the Indus River, will always be our own.”

Singh also praised the resilience of Sindhis who migrated to India after Partition, noting that despite being forced to rebuild their lives from scratch, they have made remarkable contributions across sectors and continue to play a key role in India’s economic and social progress.

He further referred to the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), reiterating remarks he had made earlier to the Indian community in Morocco. Singh said that growing demands within PoK for integration with India reflect a shift on the ground.

“PoK will be ours on its own,” he said, adding that calls for merging with India are now being raised from within the region. Recalling an earlier address to the Army, he said, “I had said that we will not need to attack PoK — it is anyway ours. A day will come when PoK itself will say, ‘Main bhi Bharat Hoon.’”
