The air in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra was heavy with grief on Sunday as Air Force Wing Commander Afshan paid her final respects to her husband, Wing Commander Namash Syal, who died in the Tejas fighter aircraft crash in Dubai on Friday.
Hundreds of villagers gathered for one last glimpse of the fallen fighter pilot, whose tricolour-draped mortal remains were placed in his native village, Patialkar. The sombre atmosphere deepened when an inconsolable Afshan, tears streaming down her face, stepped forward to bid a final farewell.
Wing Commander Syal, 37, lost his life after the Tejas aircraft he was flying crashed during a low-altitude aerobatic manoeuvre at the Dubai Airshow. Video footage showed the jet abruptly losing height before nosediving into the ground and erupting into flames at Al Maktoum International Airport.
The Indian Air Force confirmed that the pilot, in his mid-30s, sustained fatal injuries. His remains reached Kangra on Friday, sparking an outpouring of grief and pride across the region.
Several dignitaries, including Youth Services and Sports Minister Yadvinder Goma, TDC Chairman RS Bali, HRTC Vice Chairman Ajay Verma, senior district officials, and officers from the Army and Air Force offered floral tributes. State leaders earlier met the bereaved family at Gaggal Airport.
Syal was cremated with full military honours, including a gun salute. His cousin Nishant performed the last rites as relatives, locals, and uniformed personnel stood in silent mourning.
His father, Jagan Nath Syal, said the loss was not only personal but a “great loss to the nation”, remembering his son as a highly skilled and exceptional aerobatic pilot.
Air Force’s Tribute
On Saturday, the Indian Air Force paid homage to the fallen officer, describing him as a “dedicated fighter pilot and thorough professional” known for his unwavering commitment and dignified conduct. In a post on X, the IAF said it stood in solidarity with the family during this hour of profound grief.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also called Syal a “brave and courageous IAF pilot” and offered his condolences. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and several political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, expressed sorrow and honoured his service.
How the Crash Unfolded
A newer video from the Dubai Airshow captured the final moments of the crash. The Tejas was performing a low-altitude aerobatic routine when it suddenly lost height and crashed. A brief appearance of what looked like a partially deployed parachute between the 49–52 second timestamp suggested a last-second ejection attempt, but the aircraft was too low for survival.
The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash. The Tejas otherwise has a strong safety record, and investigators believe Syal may have been trying to stabilise the jet in the final seconds.
Wing Commander Syal is survived by his wife, Afshan, and their seven-year-old daughter.
