Sensex Opens Lower, Nifty Holds Above 26,300; HCL Tech Declines, ONGC Gains.

Benchmark indices opened mixed on Wednesday, with domestic markets reacting to positive global cues amid geopolitical tension. The BSE Sensex fell 121.96 points to 85,640.05, while the Nifty50 inched up 5.15 points to 26,333.70.

Top Movers: On the BSE, EL, SBI, and Reliance Industries led gains, while HCLTech, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra dragged the index lower. On the NSE, ONGC, Coal India, and BEL were the key gainers, with HCLTech, Infosys, and Wipro among the laggards.

Broader Markets: The Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.19%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.55%. Sector-wise, Nifty PSU Bank led with a 1.3% gain, followed by Media (+1.08%), whereas Nifty IT declined 0.75%.

Currency and Commodities: The Indian rupee opened flat at 90.20/$, while investors turned to precious metals amid US–Venezuela tensions. MCX Gold futures rose 1%, and MCX Silver jumped nearly 3% in early trade on January 5.

Global Cues:

Asian markets kicked off the first full trading week of 2026 on a strong note after the US reported an airstrike in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 2.26%, and South Korea’s Kospi climbed 2.19% to a record 4,420.92, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 traded flat.

Wall Street ended Friday, January 2, mixed: S&P 500 +0.19%, Dow Jones +0.66%, Nasdaq Composite -0.03%.

Oil prices edged higher: Brent crude at $60.90/bbl (+0.25%), WTI at $57.38/bbl (+0.10%).

Investors await the Bank of England’s consumer credit and UK mortgage lending data, along with US ISM manufacturing and employment reports.
