Shanaka Apologises After Sri Lanka Crash Out of T20 World Cup 2026
Skipper Dasun Shanaka has urged supporters not to lose faith in Sri Lanka national cricket team after their exit from the T20 World Cup 2026.
The co-hosts were knocked out following a crushing 61-run defeat to New Zealand national cricket team at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday. The loss ended Sri Lanka’s semifinal hopes and marked the fifth straight T20 World Cup in which they failed to reach the last four.
Promising Start, Painful Finish
Sri Lanka’s campaign had its highs and lows. Ahead of the tournament, they endured a 3-0 warm-up series defeat against England cricket team. However, they bounced back strongly in the World Cup with three consecutive wins before losing momentum at a crucial stage.
Reflecting on the campaign, Shanaka admitted the team fell short of expectations despite entering the tournament with confidence and clear plans.
“I’m deeply sorry that this World Cup didn’t end as we expected. As the host country, we approached the tournament with strong belief and clear plans. I truly believed we could move forward,” Shanaka wrote on Facebook.
He acknowledged the frustration among fans and accepted responsibility for the team’s shortcomings.
“I know the pain, anger and disappointment you feel towards me and the team. I humbly ask you not to give up your trust in Sri Lankan cricket or the players committed to carrying forward our legacy.”
‘Not Easy to Endure Defeat’
The Sri Lankan captain admitted that dealing with defeat on such a grand stage is never easy, especially when millions hope for victory.
“It’s not easy to endure defeat when a million people are dreaming of success. I accept all the criticism because it comes from your deep love for the game.”
Shanaka assured supporters that he remains committed to giving his best for the country.
“No matter the situation, I will always give everything for Sri Lanka. I apologize for not delivering the victory you expected. Thank you for standing with us.”
One Final Chance
Sri Lanka will now look to salvage pride in their final Super 8 clash against Pakistan national cricket team, led by Salman Ali Agha, on February 28 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
While the semifinal dream is over, Shanaka and his men will hope to finish their campaign on a positive note in front of home supporters.
