Govt Pulls Up BSNL Director, Issues Show-Cause Notice Over Prayagraj Protocol Row

A controversy has erupted after an internal circular detailing extensive arrangements for a senior Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) director’s proposed visit to Prayagraj surfaced online, prompting the government to issue a show-cause notice.

The notice has been served to BSNL Director Vivek Banzal. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the episode as “unacceptable” and said strict action would follow after reviewing the director’s response.

“I have made it very clear that this is improper and a violation of established rules and traditions. It is unacceptable to me. It is shocking. A show-cause notice has already been issued to the Director with a seven-day response period. We will take appropriate action,” Scindia said.

Visit Scrapped After Backlash

The controversy began after an internal office order outlining preparations for Banzal’s two-day trip, scheduled for February 25–26, went viral on social media. The document reportedly assigned around 20 tasks to nearly 50 officials, triggering criticism over the scale of arrangements for a public sector executive.

Officials later confirmed that the Prayagraj visit was cancelled amid the backlash.

What The Order Detailed

The circular included a detailed itinerary featuring a visit to the Sangam for ritual bathing, a boat ride, and trips to religious sites such as Bade Hanuman Mandir, Akshayavat and Patalpuri temples.

It also specified the preparation of ‘snan’ kits containing towels, slippers, combs, mirrors, oil bottles and undergarments. Separate kits for male and female members were mentioned. Additional instructions included arranging bedsheets at the ghat and providing fruit bowls, dry fruits, toiletries and shaving kits at the hotel and Circuit House.

The specificity of the arrangements sparked criticism online, with many questioning whether public resources were being used appropriately. The government has said further action will be decided after examining the director’s explanation.
