Sourav Ganguly Receives Death Threat, Files Police Complaint In Kolkata

Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and his wife, Dona Ganguly, have received death threats, prompting the family to approach Kolkata Police and seek enhanced security.

According to a complaint filed by Ganguly’s personal assistant, threatening letters have been received by the former cricketer and his family over the past several months. While the earlier letters were reportedly dismissed as the work of disgruntled or overzealous individuals, the latest communication allegedly contained explicit threats to harm Ganguly, his wife and members of his staff.

The latest letters were reportedly opened at the office of the Bengal cricket president on Monday. Written in English, they allegedly contained threatening and derogatory remarks and warned that Ganguly and his family would be “eliminated” or “finished”.

The complaint was subsequently lodged at Thakurpukur Police Station, while the state government’s security department has also been alerted and asked to assess the situation.

Threatening Letters Received For Months

The complaint states that letters containing objectionable remarks about Ganguly had been arriving for several months. Initially, the family reportedly did not consider them serious, believing they were expressions of personal resentment from someone who disliked the former cricketer.

However, the tone of the latest letters allegedly escalated to direct threats against the lives and safety of Ganguly, Dona Ganguly and people working with him.

The complaint has sought a detailed investigation to identify the person responsible and appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the Ganguly family and their staff.

Police Investigate Sender’s Identity

According to preliminary findings, the threatening letters were allegedly sent by courier to the Ganguly residence. The sender’s name on the package was reportedly mentioned as Arun Kumar, a resident of Belgharia.

Investigators have also traced a phone number mentioned in the letter. A search through the caller-identification service Truecaller reportedly returned the same name.

Police are now investigating whether the person named Arun Kumar actually sent the letters or whether his identity may have been misused by someone else.

“We have started an investigation and are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Mr. Ganguly and his family,” police officials reportedly told Ganguly’s personal assistant after receiving the complaint.

Given Ganguly’s public profile, the state security department is also assessing the threat and examining whether additional security cover is required.

The investigation is ongoing, and the identity and motive of the person behind the alleged threats have not yet been established.
