Spain Pledges $710 Million in New Military Aid Package for Ukraine

Spain has announced a fresh military aid package worth €615 million ($710 million) for Ukraine, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reaffirming Madrid’s support for Kyiv as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.

Standing beside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a joint press conference in Madrid, Sánchez said that €300 million from the package would be used to procure “new defence equipment” for Ukrainian forces.

“Your fight is ours,” Sánchez declared, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of pursuing “neo-imperialism” designed to undermine Europe and its values. The announcement followed the signing of several bilateral agreements, including new cooperation to counter Russian disinformation campaigns.

The visit came as the war, now in its third year, continues to inflict devastating losses. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers have been killed, and millions displaced.

Earlier in the day, Sánchez and Zelensky visited Madrid’s Reina Sofía Museum, where they viewed Picasso’s iconic anti-war painting “Guernica.” The artwork has become a symbol of civilian suffering during conflict. Zelensky has previously compared the destruction in Ukraine to the 1937 bombing of Guernica by Nazi forces supporting Franco during the Spanish Civil War.

Zelensky, who met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, will travel to Turkiye on Wednesday for renewed peace talks involving President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
