Stock Market Today: Sensex Slips 104 Points, Nifty Trades Near 23,141 as India VIX Climbs
Indian equity benchmarks began Monday’s trading session, October 19, on a subdued note as losses in banking and financial stocks offset gains in public sector banks, pharmaceuticals and select heavyweight shares.
At 9:23 am, the BSE Sensex was trading at 74,625.71, down 103.56 points or 0.14%. The NSE Nifty 50 stood at 23,140.90, marginally below its previous close of 23,146.15, recording a decline of 5.25 points or 0.02%.
The opening session reflected mixed sectoral performance, with investors monitoring corporate earnings, movements in crude oil prices and developments in global markets.
Banking and Financial Stocks Weigh on Benchmarks
Banking shares remained under pressure in early trade. The Nifty Bank index fell 0.39% to 55,626.40, while the Nifty Financial Services index declined 0.58%.
The Nifty Private Bank index registered a sharper fall of 1.24%, highlighting weakness among private-sector lenders.
In contrast, public sector banking stocks moved higher. The Nifty PSU Bank index advanced 1.99% to 8,256.30, emerging as the strongest-performing sectoral index during the opening hours.
Pharmaceutical and healthcare shares also supported the market. The Nifty Pharma index gained 0.69%, while the Nifty Healthcare index rose 0.60%.
The Nifty Auto index edged up 0.21%, while the Metal, Oil and Gas, and Consumer Durables indices also traded in positive territory. Meanwhile, the Nifty IT index slipped 0.45%, and the FMCG index declined 0.14%.
Broader Markets Show Mixed Performance
The broader market indices recorded modest gains in select segments, although small-cap stocks remained under pressure.
The Nifty 100 rose 0.06%, while the Nifty 200 gained 0.04%. The Nifty Next 50 performed relatively better, advancing 0.41%.
However, the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 0.08%, the Nifty Smallcap 250 fell 0.21%, and the Nifty Microcap 250 dropped 0.40%.
The mixed performance indicated that market movements remained uneven, with gains concentrated in certain sectors and categories of stocks.
India VIX Rises 2.59%
India VIX, which measures the market’s expected volatility, climbed 2.59% to 14.43 during early trade.
The increase indicated a rise in expected market fluctuations, although the index alone does not determine the direction of future movements.
Investors are also assessing the impact of international developments and quarterly corporate earnings on market sentiment.
Crude Oil Prices and Global Tensions Remain Key Concerns
V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, said the momentum from last week’s 2.8% rally in the Nifty, combined with encouraging results from major banking companies following better-than-expected earnings from leading IT firms, could help the market remain resilient.
However, he cautioned that escalating tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and a rise in Brent crude prices to $109 per barrel could create significant headwinds for equities.
Vijayakumar also noted that attractive valuations among large-cap stocks and the appreciation of the rupee had made foreign institutional investors somewhat more positive towards Indian equities. Nevertheless, he warned that this shift might not last if crude oil prices remained elevated.
According to the strategist, the tendency of large-cap stocks to outperform mid-cap and small-cap shares could continue. He also expected trading activity during the week to be driven largely by individual stocks responding to second-quarter earnings results.
With benchmark indices opening largely flat and sectoral performance remaining divided, investors are likely to keep a close watch on corporate earnings, crude oil prices and global geopolitical developments for further direction.
